The adaptive testing system is a stand alone system that accompanies the Interactive Linear Algebra with Maple V. It includes a student package as well as an instructor's package. The user has the option of selecting either an adaptive or nonadaptive form of the test. The test interface includes a calculator, access to Maple V, hints, explanation, confirm button, and access to general help. The purpose of the adaptive version is to provide immediate feedback on studens' progress in learning a particular concept or algorithm. The degree of difficulty of the questions in the adaptive version of the test is based on the number of correct answers. The nonadaptive version provides randomly selected questions. In the nonadaptive form, the user must specify the number of questions to be attempted. There are over 400 multiple-choice questions each ranked according to degree of difficulty.

At the end of the test a report is provided that includes the student's score, number of correct answers, questions that have not been attempted, and an explanation for the incorrectly answered questions. The instructor's package included with the testing allows instructors to add new questions, modify existing ones, and keep a detailed record of the students. The password to access the the instructor's package is bgd.
